A container terminal’s main function is to allow for the transfer of shipping containers and cargo between ships and other modes of transport, such as trucks and trains. Terminals also act as a checkpoint where ships are inspected, loaded, and unloaded.

In a single port, you’ll find many different container terminals, each dedicated to handling specific types of goods and materials. Activities at terminals include the temporary storage of containers, maintenance and repair, and sometimes consolidation and deconsolidation of cargo.
